Why Most 'Copper Peptide' Products Kill the Copper Peptide

Most "copper peptide" products on the shelf do not have working copper peptide left in them by the time they reach your skin. Two things kill it before it ever gets to work: chelating agents, and heat.

What actually makes copper peptide work

GHK-Cu is a small peptide, three amino acids, bonded to a single copper ion. The copper is the part that does the work: it is what signals repair to the skin, and it is also what gives the complex its blue color. Break that copper-peptide bond, and what is left on the label is inactive peptide wearing an active-sounding name.

The first killer: chelating agents

EDTA, disodium EDTA, tetrasodium EDTA, sodium phytate: these are standard in nearly every emulsion-based skincare product, added to bind stray metal ions and keep the formula stable. Copper is a metal ion. A chelator does its job on GHK-Cu the same way it does on everything else in the jar: it grabs the copper and pulls it off the peptide.

You can verify this yourself. Pick any cream-based "copper peptide" product on the market and read the ingredient list. If a chelator sits anywhere near the top, that copper is not doing much anymore.

The second killer: heat

Emulsions, the creams and lotions most copper peptide products are sold as, are made by melting oil and water phases together at high heat, then cooling the mixture into something stable. That heat is exactly what GHK-Cu cannot survive: the copper-peptide bond breaks down under it, often before the product ever reaches a shelf.

Why a gel avoids both problems

Read the ingredient list before you buy. If a chelator sits near the top of a "copper peptide" product, the copper is not the active ingredient anymore. It is decoration.
